aSSIGNMENTS
Working solo and in groups, students will engage in a series of weekly skill-development assignments that build upon each other throughout the duration of the course.
As soon I stepped out of the classroom, the ice on the koi pond caught my eye. The color was as white as snow outlined by opaque edges. There was still water running through to the brightly colored fishes dressed in white, yellow, and orange. I stared at the beautiful scene for so long my head began to turn walking past it. Adjacent to the koi pond are these striking plants. However, they were dead. The only remains were the blood-red stems. White and red are such conflicting colors. I then looked down to the path in front of me, it was made of brick. Brick is an interesting color because it can be red or brown or both. This brick was even more interesting because there were white patches randomly in the middle of multiple pieces. Again, white and red caught my eye. I looked up and noticed Providence College is covered in brick. My eye continued traveling upward to the clear blue sky. It was a beautiful sunny day without even my acknowledgement of the yellow sun. As I continued with my walk, I sensed I was not as excited about other colors around me as I was with the white and the red I first saw. My favorite color is pink which is just a mix of those two colors, maybe that is why I was so intrigued. So, I took a turn to regain my attention. I ended up by one of my favorite spots on campus, the softball field. The black netting in front of the Providence skyline is unmissable. The black is so bold against the different shades of perfectly cut green grass. I was able to appreciate the clear blue sky in the more open setting. Everything around me was so bright. I think I become aware of contrasting colors first and then the natural colors around me, especially in the winter.

Notetaker: Annie DeLello
Sketch Artist: Allison LeBelle

Why is the business center so intimidating?
1. How can the space be more inviting?
2. Variety of PC students using the space.
3. BOP events, clubs, game viewings, meetings, etc.
4. Could be geological, there is a lot of state of the art technology
5. How can the business minors fit in with the business center.
Summary:
Last week we presented our group findings on the Ryan Business School here at Providence College. In our presentation we identified the design problem that we found with the business school, which was that the Ryan center itself is not accessible to students who are not business majors. Some ideas that we had to improve this was to have more events for non business majors, particularly students who are pursuing the Business Innovation Minor. We also thought that there could be more club meetings held there and school wide events held there as well.
We were given more ideas from the class after our presentation was finished. These ideas were very helpful and gave us a variety of directions that we could go in as we continue our project. One suggestion was to make the students more aware of the resources that Ryan offers, and to have sessions for them to utilize said resources. Another was to create more individualized study spaces. Both of these suggestions are valid options we'll consider as we move forward in the design process.

What I took away from the reading is that design thinking is hard and takes time. Problem solving is a process that involved multiple stages. For example, observation is key to learning the target population. In order to sell successfully, the firm should understand a customers needs and wants. Behavior can be compulsive. The most vital aspect of design thinking is empathy. One page forty-nine, it states "distinction between academic thinking and design thinking". People more than anything base designs off emotions.
The landscape is always changing. As a design thinking team there is a lot of data to collect. There will always be problems so, having the ability to solve is important. A personal example would be, time management. It is important to use all the time and resources I have. For example, I have to fly home over breaks. However, it takes all day and I still have homework. So, I turn my seat into a desk and work. As a result, I feel productive and can have fun when I get home. In addition, this process made me realize I problem solve everyday.

How has this article introduced or expanded your knowledge of the Design Process? Before reading this article, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what art was. However, this article expanded my knowledge of the design process by emphasizing the importance that design everywhere. Everyday things are beautiful like, nature. I have always enjoyed and appreciated the art that was around me. In my own life, I love to draw and dance. Everyone experiences art, whether they like it or not! There is a hierarchy in art, purposeful and emotive is at the top. I also learned, man consumes our own designs. Art is all around us. What are the particular tenants or signature elements of your selected art period/movement?
Art Nouveau is international and includes all medias. This movement is inspired by natural forms and structures. Art Nouveau’s signature elements are asymmetrical lines, ornamental design, and flowers, vines, wings, etc. to create the aesthetic of elegance.

Find a contemporary object/artwork/item that is influenced by and/or reminds you of the selected art period/movement. Between Earth and Sky reminds me of the art nouveau movement. Despite being modern, the artwork shares similar elements like, the nature, wings from the bird as well as a simplistic yet detailed background.

The scavenger hunt project was one of the most interesting things I have been challenged with in my college career. When you [the professor] introduced Mark Dion, I thought his pieces were so complicated. How could I connect all fifteen artifacts to one another? However, I was able to understand a little bit more of what you expected from us. This was not an easy assignment. The design process values creativity and especially teamwork. My group is showing a time capsule of PC through the lens of Art 205 Spring 2019 in our yearbook. We wanted those looking at our archive to be able to stand in our shoes and empathize with us when looking at it. Learning the steps of the design process in class as well as studying other examples was crucial to fully grasp the concepts of the process. Design thinking has helped not only me, but also my team to create something unique. We started out with way to many ideas. The five steps made my team reflect on our progress each time we met.I think the most vital steps were the ideate and prototype stages. That is when the entire project came together. During the ideate phase, we flushed out ideas and came to a decision as a group on what idea best pictured our pieces, a yearbook on a bookshelf. During the prototype phase, we communicated the core elements of our design as a group. When our final product came into full bloom, we all took a sigh of relief. All of our hard work and research had paid off. I learned so much from this class. It changed the way I think about problems. I would love to try this project again or undertake a different project on my own with the information I know now and improve. These tools will help me in my future as a business and innovation minor and as I enter the workforce.
